G. WALTER BURWELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The G. Walter Burwell Memorial Scholarship was established in 1978 by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees with a gift to The Ohio State University Development Fund from Mrs. Helen A. Burwell in memory of her husband, G. Walter Burwell, BS, Horticulture, '22.

SPECIALIZATION:  Landscape Horticulture

GENERAL:  Preference is given to students who exhibit financial need. 

RANK:  Sophomore, Junior, Senior

AWARD AMOUNT:  $1600 (award could be divided between multiple applicants)



COLUMBUS HORTICULTURE SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP


The Columbus Horticulture Society, the third oldest horticulture society in the United States, was founded April 10, 1845.  The founders were citizens who took an early interest in the physical and educational development of Columbus and were instrumental in promoting active participation and interest in horticulture through sponsorship of flower and fruit fairs, the promotion of city parks, and the planting of trees on The Ohio State University campus.  As a manifestation of their continued interest in horticulture, the Columbus Horticulture Society established a scholarship in 1963 for the Department of Horticulture at The Ohio State University.

SPECIALIZATION:  All majors in Horticulture and Crop Science are eligible.

GENERAL:  The recipient shall be a resident of the state of Ohio and must show financial need.

CGPA:  2.5 or above and 3.0 or above in horticultural subjects.

RANK:  Preference will be given to applicants who have completed 5 quarters of work at an Ohio state-assisted university or one of its branches.  Any applicant must have taken 10 hours of horticulture subjects at The Ohio State University.

AWARD AMOUNT:  $500 Awarded in odd-numbered years. 



PAUL ECKE, JR.  SCHOLAR FUND


The Paul Ecke, Jr. Scholar Fund was established in 2007 to be used to provide stipends for students who work directly with faculty in the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science in the ornamental and floriculture area.  The program consists of an annual competition with students who have been awarded during their junior year re-applying during their senior year.  The program will include a working experience in ornamentals and floriculture, including research and/or work in the Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens.

SPECIALIZATION:   Crop Science (floriculture) and Landscape Horticulture

RANK:   Juniors and Seniors

AWARD AMOUNT:   $1000



FRANKLIN GARDEN CLUB OF COLUMBUS SCHOLARSHIP


The Franklin Garden Club of Columbus has an objective of promoting active participation and interest in horticulture through many activities.  As a manifestation of its continued interest in the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science at The Ohio State University, it established a scholarship in 1981 in the Department of Horticulture for students specializing in landscape horticulture.

SPECIALIZATION:  Landscape Horticulture

GENERAL:  The recipient shall be a resident of the state of Ohio.

AWARD AMOUNT:  $2000  (award could be divided between multiple applicants)



ALPHA AND PAUL E. HAFFEY SCHOLARSHIP


Established in 1990 by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees with gifts from Alpha Gesell Haffey (B.S. Home Economics) and Paul E. Haffey (B.S. Agriculture) of Saddle River, New Jersey.  The annual income shall be divided equally between the College of Agriculture and the College of Human Ecology to provide one or more scholarships to undergraduate and/or graduate students.

SPECIALIZATION:  Preference given to those in Crop Science (floriculture) Marketing.

RANK:  Undergraduate and graduate students may apply for this award.

AWARD AMOUNT:  $1400 (award could be divided between multiple applicants)



GOLF COURSE BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA

Established in 2008, this scholarships will be awarded with preference given to Ohio residents. 

SPECIALIZATION:  Turfgrass

RANK:   Junior and Seniors

CGPA:  3.0 or above

AWARD AMOUNT:  $1000



GUSTAV W. HUHN SCHOLARSHIP FUND


Established in 2002 from gifts from Gertrude H. Huhn of Cleveland, Ohio.
The annual income shall be used to provide scholarship(s) to HCS students, with priority based on a concentration of study in the field of floriculture.

SPECIALIZATION:  Crop Science (floriculture)

AWARD AMOUNT:  $1000 (award could be divided between multiple applicants)



D. C.  KIPLINGER/OFA SCHOLARSHIP

Established in 1979 by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees by the Ohio Florists Association in memory of Dr. D.C. Kiplinger.

SPECIALIZATION: Crop Science (floriculture)

GENERAL:  The recipient of this award shall closely exemplify the philosophy of the late D.C. Kiplinger in his or her own life.  This philosophy is not easily defined;  however, it is essentially classified by honesty, integrity, camaraderie, unselfishness and professionalism in the field of floriculture.

AWARD AMOUNT:   $500



THOMAS B. KYLE SCHOLARSHIP

The Thomas B. Kyle Scholarship Fund was established in 1990 by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees with gifts to honor the late Thomas B. Kyle, founder of Spring Hill Nurseries Co., in Tipp City, Ohio.  All gifts are invested in the University Permanent Endowment Fund.

SPECIALIZATION:  Landscape Horticulture

AWARD AMOUNT:  $4000 (award could be divided between multiple applicants)



GARY J. NICHOLSON SCHOLARSHIP


The Gary J. Nicholson Memorial Scholarship in Horticulture was established in 1990 by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees with gifts to honor the late Gary Nicholson of Burlington, Ontario, Canada.  All gifts are invested in the University Permanent Endowment Fund.

SPECIALIZATION:  Crop Science (floriculture) marketing with preference to Canadian applicants.

RANK:  Undergraduate or Graduate student

AWARD AMOUNT:  $1100 (award could be divided between multiple applicants)



OHIO AGRIBUSINESS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

DESCRIPTION:   Students should have an interest in entering the agribusiness industry in production, management, sales, or marketing upon graduation.

SPECIALIZATION:  Crop Science  (agronomy)

GENERAL:  Scholarship awarded on academic performance as well as leadership and club activities. 

CGPA:  3.0 or above

AWARD AMOUNT:  $1500



OHIO ASSOCIATION OF GARDEN CLUBS HORTICULTURE SCHOLARSHIP


Established in 1979 by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees with a gift to The Ohio State University Development Fund from the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs.

SPECIALIZATION:  Crop Science (floriculture) or Landscape Horticulture

GENERAL:  The recipient shall be chosen with no consideration to financial need.  The recipient shall show leadership potential:  for example, holding an office in a student organization.

RANK:  Preference is given to Juniors.

AWARD AMOUNT:  $1400 (award could be divided between multiple applicants)



FRED O. HARTMAN SCHOLARSHIP


The Ohio Fruit Growers Scholarship was established by the Ohio Fruit Growers Society in honor of retired pomology Professor Fred O. Hartman.

SPECIALIZATION:  Crop Science (pomology)

GENERAL:  The scholarship will be awarded to support an undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing with a fruit crops interest (Crop Science Major) in Horticulture and Crop Science, and or demonstrating an association or involvement with the Ohio Fruit Industry.

CGPA:  Good academic standing.

RANK:  All may apply.  Preference is given to those nearest graduation.

AWARD AMOUNT:  $1600 (award could be divided between multiple applicants)



JERRY ROBERTSON/OFA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP


Established in 1985 by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees with a scholarship stipend in memory of Professor Jerry L Robertson.  Originally named the Landscape and Floriculture Forum Scholarship in 1973.

SPECIALIZATION:  Crop Science (floriculture) or Landscape Horticulture

GENERAL:  Preference given to applicants with coursework or job experience related to Floriculture or Landscape Marketing.

AWARD AMOUNT:  $500



LINVILLE-SHOEMAKER SCHOLARSHIP

DESCRIPTION:  Established September 2, 1971, by family and friends in memory of Harold E. Shoemaker and Ray Allen Linville.  Income provides scholarships for outstanding sophomore or junior agronomy majors with professional attitudes and devotion to agronomy.

SPECIALIZATION:  Crop Science (agronomy)

GENERAL:  Scholarship awarded on academic performance as well as leadership and club activities.

RANK:  First priority is given to sophomore or juniors.

AWARD AMOUNT:  $2000 (award could be divided between multiple applicants)



WILLIAM J. SKOU SCHOLARSHIP

Established in 1982 by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees with gifts to The Ohio State University Development Fund from the estate of William J. Skou of Akron, Ohio.  The fund was established with the intent of attracting academically outstanding students to floriculture.

SPECIALIZATION:  Crop Science (floriculture)

CGPA:  Maintain a 3.0 or above. 

REQUIREMENTS:
-Declare a major in Crop Science or Landscape Horticulture with a special interest in floriculture.        
-Make satisfactory progress in that degree program.
-Successfully complete the H&CS courses:  200, 300, 310, 401.01, 521, 522.
-H&CS 300 must be completed by the end of the sophomore year or within 2 quarters of declaration of major. 

-Select 5 hours from the following H&CS courses to strengthen the floriculture emphasis:  HCS 320, HCS 430, HCS 431, HCS 560

-Complete an approved floriculture-related internship by the beginning of your senior year.

REPEAT ELIGIBILITY:  The Skou scholarship is available for a maximum of 12 quarters.  Annual renewal will be based on completion of the scholarship application and a review of progress being made in the above requirements.

DOROTHY KUDER SMITH SCHOLARSHIP


Established originally in 1975 by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees with a gift from Floyd and Dorothy Smith.  It was updated in 1983 by the late Mr. Floyd F. Smith in memory of his wife Mrs. Dorothy Kuder Smith.

SPECIALIZATION:  Crop Science (floriculture)

GENERAL:  The recipient of this award shall exhibit leadership abilities:  for example, holding a major office in student organizations.  The recipient shall possess high personable characteristics. 

AWARD AMOUNT:  $950 (award could be divided between multiple applicants)



MARIAN K. THOMAS HORTICULTURE FUND

Established in 1986 by gifts to The Ohio State University's permanent endowment fund from Mrs. Marian K. Thomas of Columbus, Ohio.

SPECIALIZATION:  Landscape Horticulture

GENERAL:  Preference is give to students displaying financial need and individual motivation.

AWARD AMOUNT:  $960 (award could be divided between multiple applicants)



THE TORO COMPANY SCHOLARSHIP


The Toro Company Scholarship was established in 2007.  Income provides scholarships to freshmen or to sophomores, or to students pursuing international internships, enrolled in the turfgrass major at The Ohio State University.  Preference is given to students with relatives involved in the profession of turfgrass science.

SPECIALIZATION: Turfgrass Science

GENERAL: Preference given to students with relatives in the profession of turfgrass science

RANK:    Freshman or Sophomore

AWARD AMOUNT:  $1600 (award could be divided between multiple applicants)



DEAN AND LUCILLE TRESCH SCHOLARSHIP FUND


Established in 1982 by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees with a gift from Dean and Lucille Tresch.

SPECIALIZATION:  Crop Science (Pomology) or Food Technology

RANK:  Sophomore, Junior, Senior

AWARD AMOUNT:  $5000 (award could be divided between multiple applicants)



CARL D. WEALS SCHOLARSHIP

DESCRIPTION:  The Carl D. Weals Scholarship Fund was established in February, 1997, by the family of Carl Weals.  Mr. Weals was a graduate of the Department of Horticulture at The Ohio State University, an employee of Ball Seeds, and a leader in the greenhouse/floriculture industry in Ohio.

SPECIALIZATION:  Preference to undergraduate Crop Science (floriculture) students

CGPA:  3.0 or above. 


GENE WITTMEYER VEGETABLE SCHOLARSHIP

The Gene Wittmeyer Vegetable Scholarship was established in 2002 with gifts from the Ohio Vegetable and Potato Gower’s Association, and alumni and friends honoring Professor Emeritus Gene Wittmeyer (B.S. Agr.1946)  

SPECIALIZATION:  Preference given to students with an interest in vegetable crops (crop science major), and/or students demonstrating association or involvement with the Ohio vegetable industry.

RANK:    Undergraduate  or Graduate Student

AWARD AMOUNT:  $1600 (award could be divided between multiple applicants)



Special Scholarship – To Be Announced Fall Quarter, ‘10

The Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association

Description:    The Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association awards annually the ONLA/Phil Kozel Scholarships, in honor of late Dr. Kozel, OSU Landscape Horticulture Professor. 

SPECIALIZATION:        Landscape Horticulture

GENERAL:            -Outstanding Academic Record
-Noteworthy participation in outside activities
-Financial need
-Must have completed an internship prior to       January of the following year
-Member of ONLA

RANK    :            2 to upperclass persons

AWARD AMOUNT:    $1000
